What is llms.txt and how to create yours (free generator)

llms.txt is a text file placed at the root of a website (yourdomain.com/llms.txt) to tell language models, in a few lines, what the site is and which pages are worth reading. It is what robots.txt is for crawlers, but the other way round: it forbids nothing, it summarises. Here you will find what it is, what it does and does not do, how to write it, where to upload it depending on your platform, and a generator to create yours in two minutes.

English translation of the Spanish guide. Published on 2 October 2026 by Salvador Nadal.

The figure: as of 2 October 2026, only 28% of the Spanish websites we audit in our census publish an llms.txt. The rest have none.

What it is for, and what it is not for

The proposal was published by Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI) in September 2024, at llmstxt.org. The idea is simple: a modern website is full of menus, scripts and adverts, and a model struggles to find what matters. A short Markdown file gives it the summary and the right links.

The honest thing is to also say what it does not do. Today no major assistant has confirmed that it uses llms.txt to decide who to recommend, and Google has said publicly that its search engine does not use it. Agents, coding tools and some crawlers do read it. In other words: it is not a magic lever, it is a cheap help. It takes ten minutes, has no downside and, if assistants adopt it, you will already have it. What really makes an AI recommend you is in the seven steps of this guide, and llms.txt is the sixth.

How to write it

It is Markdown, in a fixed order:

  1. A # heading with the name of the business or site. It is the only required part.
  2. A > quote with the summary: what you are, what you do, for whom and where, in one or two sentences.
  3. If needed, one or two paragraphs with what a model should know (opening hours, area, what you do not do).
  4. ## sections with lists of links: - [Title](url): note.
  5. An ## Optional section with secondary material the model can skip.

An example for a garage:

# Example Garage

> Car repair shop in Villena (Alicante): general mechanics, tyres and pre-MOT checks
> for private cars and vans. Open Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 18:00.

Address: Calle Mayor 1, 03400 Villena. Phone: 965 000 000.

## Services

## Optional

Frequently asked questions

Is llms.txt mandatory?

No. It is a voluntary proposal, not an official standard, and a website without one can perfectly well appear in AI answers. It is a cheap help, not a requirement.

Does llms.txt improve Google rankings?

No. Google has said its search engine does not use it. What improves Google rankings is what always has: useful content, a website that can be read, and other sites talking about you.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may and may not read. llms.txt forbids nothing: it summarises the site and points to the important pages so a model can find them quickly. They complement each other, and the first thing is that robots.txt does not block AI crawlers.

What is llms-full.txt?

A long version of the same file, with more content inside (sometimes the full text of the pages) instead of just links. It is optional and makes sense on sites with a lot of documentation; for a local business, llms.txt is enough.
